Joel is a legal technologist with a background in law, data science, and software engineering. He has two years of litigation experience and more than five years of experience in systems architecture, AI engineering, and automation. In 2024, he founded Vettam AI, a legal-tech platform focused on building practical AI tools for lawyers. His work at Vettam sits at the intersection of law, data science, and AI engineering, and he has led the development of products across legal research, drafting, document management, matter tracking, paperbook preparation, and lawyer-facing AI workflows.
Joel’s background in data science includes a focus on NLP models and sentiment analysis, which formed the basis of his master’s thesis on predicting voter decision attribution from social media posts. This combination of legal training and technical delivery enables him to translate open-ended legal and business problems into product specifications, workflow automations, AI agents, and internal tools.
His expertise in data systems and AI agents has been instrumental in building automation systems in regulated environments, including privacy-sensitive government and compliance workflows in the United Kingdom. He has also consulted with a Fortune 500 company on agent systems and workflow automation pipelines. More recently, he founded Open Source Law, a collective aimed at creating an ecosystem of open-access, free-to-use software and technology education for the legal community.
Joel currently lives in London. His recent hobby is building an on-prem voice assistant on a Raspberry Pi that can speak in a mix of informal Malayalam, Hindi, and English. He enjoys travelling and trying coffee and whiskey from around the world, and is currently on a mission to read every Booker-longlisted and Women’s Prize-winning book.
Founded Vettam - A legal-tech platform enabling boutique law firms to use AI and automation at lower cost.
Developed the process of legal hierarchical chunking for legal documents and multi-intent legal AI architecture principles used as the basis for several AI chatbots.
Represented Indian Professional Nurses Association as counsel during Covid-19, leading dialogue and representing the interest of frontline workers.
Contributed as an author and Assistant Editor - Sustainability of Sustainable Development: Lessons from the Pandemic – Satyam Law Publications (2022).
